The mill

An original exhibit...

Originally from the centre of the distillery of la Jamaïque in Saint-Denis, this authentic mill, used to crush sugar-cane, dates back to the 1940s. It was transferred to the Isautier distillery at the end of the 1960s and was in activity until the end of the 1980s.

A film, made in 1987, illustrates how it was used.

An essential object of the heritage of Reunion Island, this complete mill, the only one on the island, has been left in its original location. It is a logical element of the permanent exhibition of the museum.

Yield : 5 tonnes of sugar cane crushed per hour.

The mill consists of a steam engine, a fibre-removing machine, three crushers and an evacuation pipe for residue.
